News ELA

This site has many interesting articles all organized by category - once you pick an article you can also change the lexile to match your reading level.

Your Dictionary.com

This site allows you to look up the definition of words, synonyms, and sentence examples.

Shmoop.com

This site is great to self assess your comprehension. It has video clips that introduce novels and themes. There are also numerous quizzes that test your character, plot, and theme knowledge.

*Using shmoop alone withougt reading the novel WILL NOT help you become a stronger reader - this is a great resource but only if used IN ADDITION to reading the novel. Some students find it helpful to read chapter summaries before reading the actual chapter, while others find it better to read the summary after - summaries will not take the place of the novel but can help check your comprehension.

Quizlet.com

This site is a great vocabulary tool. You create a log in (free) and then create word lists for your ELA vocabulary lessons. Once you enter your terms and definitions there are a variety of ways you can work with the terms on the site - you can use the flash cards, play a matching game, or even work on spelling. When you have studied you can also take a test to evaluate the terms you need more help with. You can also download the ap for your smart phone, that way you always have your digital flash cards with you for review.
